NEWS from Rome Film Festival 2013

The Special Jury prize went to Romanian director Andrei Gruzsniczki for his second work “Quod Erat Demonstrandum” set during the period of Communist rule and shot in black and white.

Romania, 2013, 108 min. Trailer: http://vimeo.com/79189164
Cast: Ofelia Popii, Sorin Leoveanu, Florin Piersic Jr., Virgil Ogășanu, Tora Vasilescu, Marc Titieni, Dorian Boguță, Alina Berzunțeanu, Lucian Ifrim, George Alexandru, Ada Zamfira

Synopsis: Romania, 1984. A mathematician’s decision to publish a paper in a magazine edited by an American university without asking for permission from the authorities triggers a chain of events that will change the lives of his friends. After all, there is no such thing as a decision without consequences.

Director’s statement: “At first it was a story about a man who swam against the current. In the end, we had a film about love, betrayal, personal choices. The kind of story that passes smoothly from one character to another, through the lives of three people who are at crossroads. In any type of society there’s a constraint. Constraint generates compromise that we either accept or not. Betrayal, as a specific form of compromise, is not tolerated by any society. Anytime, anywhere, a person wants a better life for himself and his family. But at what cost? Careers, feelings, freedom, everything is at stake... The setting of the story during the Communist era is not a critical element, but it does provide a particularly sensitive context for revealing universal truths.”

“The Other Irene”, Andrei Gruzsniczki’s first feature film, was screened in London within the 6th Romanian Film Festival in 2009.
